No. 13 UAH Victorious In GSC Opener

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – On what proved to be an historic night, the No. 13 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team opened up Gulf South Conference play with a tough 71-60 victory on the road at West Alabama. In the contest, junior Jaime Smith became the program's 21st 1,ooo-point scorer.

After falling behind 2-0, the Chargers ripped off a 15-2 run that was started by an electrifying dunk from Zane Campbell that had the heavily Blue-and-White-clad crowd buzzing for several minutes, and the spurt from the visitors was capitalized by a long-range 3-pointer from Campbell that put UAH up 15-4.

Campbell finished the night as the team's leading scorer as he totaled 17 on the evening.

UAH continued to maintain a lead through the middle portion of the opening stanza, but the hosts did chip into the advantage with a 7-0 run that pulled the Tigers to within four at 17-13 with 8:39 left in the half. However, UWA could pull no closer as the Chargers went into the locker room at the halftime break holding a 33-24 edge in the contest.

Controlling play through much of the opening minutes of the second half, the Tigers cut into the Blue and White's advantage and pulled within one at 46-45 with 9:31 left in the contest.

Undeterred, the Chargers scored the game's next 11 points – four from Josh Magette and five from Ronnie Mack – to gain their largest lead of the night to that point, holding a 57-45 margin with 7:19 left. The hosts could not pull within single digits again as the advantage ballooned to as many as 15 points down the stretch.

Campbell led a group of four players that ended the night in double figures including Magette and Smith who finished with 12 points. Magette ended the night with his fourth double-double of the season as he also notched 13 assists.

Strong off the bench, Mack rounded out the quartet by scoring 11 points.

Steven Samuels – in his first game for the Tigers – led all scorers in the contest with 22 points.

The Chargers outshot UWA by a 48.0 percent to 43.4 percent clip, while the Tigers held a slim 33-31 edge on the glass.
