HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The third-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team will conclude the 2012 calendar year on Sunday when it welcomes Tuskegee for a 3 p.m. contest at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers enter the game at 8-1, while the Golden Tigers hold a 1-7 record.
The Blue and White will be aiming for the 30th win of the calendar year in the contest as the team currently sits at 29-3 in 2012.
Earlier this season the two teams met in Pensacola, Fla., at the West Florida Thanksgiving Classic, and the Chargers walked away with an 81-66 victory as both
Ronnie Mack and
Jaime Smith hit three 3-pointers in the game.
In the last statistical rankings produced by the NCAA prior to the holiday break, Mack was pacing the nation in 3-point field goal percentage, and both Smith and Mack were ranked high – 29th and 39th, respectively – in 3-point field goals per game.
Smith scored 11 against the Golden Tigers, sparking a stretch of five straight in which the Birmingham native has scored in double figures, and he has scored at least 20 in the last three contests to lead the Chargers with 16.2 points per game.
An 84.8 percent performer for his career, Smith is hitting free throws at an 83.7 percent clip this season to help UAH rank 26th in Division II in free throw percentage, and the team matched a season-high with 20 made freebies against Tuskegee in the earlier meeting.
That win evened up the all-time series between the two programs at 2-2.
Tuskegee's lone victory of the season came against Montevallo – a 68-65 triumph in which Javier McKinney scored 21 and Josh Jones recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. McKinney tallied 20 against the Chargers, while Calvin Thomas added 22.
