HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Looking to extend its winning streak to 10 games, the No. 6 UAH men's basketball team is set to continue the Valdosta-to-Pensacola road trip as it will take on West Florida on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the UWF Field House. The Chargers own an 18-3 (9-1 Gulf South Conference) record, and the Argos enter the contest at 15-9 (5-5 GSC).
The game will be the first for the Blue and White since the team took over sole possession of first place in the GSC after its 87-65 victory over Valdosta State.
In that contest,
Jaime Smith erupted for 30 points and made seven 3-pointers, solidifying himself at the top performer in the GSC in treys per game as he averages 3.5 per contest, and Smith also ranks first in the league in 3-point field goal percentage as he hits 50.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
The 3.5 3-pointers per game technically ranks Smith second in the country in the statistical category, but he is in a virtual tie as he sits just two hundredths behind Molloy's Jimmy Nolan.
Josh Magette continues to lead the country in assists per game with 9.6, averaging better than one assist more per contest than the next closest player, and he sits in second in assist/turnover ratio, averaging 3.42 assists for every turnover.
As a team the Chargers rank seventh in the nation in field goal percentage, but the squad will be facing the country's third-best shooting team in West Florida on Saturday.
The Argos shoot at an impressive 53.1 clip, while UAH has registered a shooting percentage of 52.4.
In the prior meeting between the two squads, the Chargers held UWF to just 47.8 percent from the floor in an 89-73 victory at Spragins Hall.
Zane Campbell led a quartet of Chargers who finished in double figures as he scored 28, while Magette notched a double-double with 22 points and 10 assists.
Leading the Argos was Marquis Mathis who scored 20, and UAH did a solid job of limiting UWF's top scorer Jamar Moore to just 12 points – more than five points under his season average.
The victory gave the Chargers a 24-14 advantage in the all-time series with Saturday's hosts, and UAH has won three straight in Pensacola with its last loss coming in the 2007-08 season.
