HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Closing out the regular season with its in-state rival, the No. 4 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team will host North Alabama for a 7 p.m. showdown at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday night. The Chargers enter the game on a program-best 13-game winning streak and boast a 22-3 (13-1 Gulf South Conference) record, while UNA visits at 14-10 (7-6 GSC).
The Chargers have wrapped up the top seed in next week's GSC tournament and will face the No. 8 seed Delta State on Friday, March 2.
Prior to the contest,
Josh Magette and
Srdjan Boskovic will be honored as the seniors will play their last regular season contest on the floor inside Spragins Hall.
The team continues to feature a trio of the nation's best offensive players as
Jaime Smith ranks first in the country in 3-point field goal percentage and second in 3-point field goals per game, while Magette ranks first in assists per game and assist/turnover ratio.
Zane Campbell owns the 11th-best field goal percentage in the country.
After shaking off some weariness from the quick jaunt up to Indiana from Memphis, UAH comfortably defeated Oakland City 96-78 with an impressive six Chargers scoring in double figures in the victory led by Smith's 21. Indiana-native
Conner Blasi was also strong in the affair as he scored 16 while grabbing five rebounds.
Capping off a strong week that earned him GSC Player of the Week honors, Magette scored 10, handed out eight assists, and collected five rebounds.
Since last meeting UAH, North Alabama has won four of its six contests including a road wins at Valdosta State and Delta State, and the team owns a 3-3 mark on the road in league play. Theron Jenkins and Beaumont Beasley lead the team as they average 16.6 and 16.4 points per game, respectively, while Jenkins paces the squad with an impressive 9.1 rebounds per contest.
With the 84-77 UAH victory in Florence earlier, the all-time series is now tilted 32-22 in UNA's favor, but the Chargers have won six straight including an 83-76 decision at Spragins Hall last season.
In the meeting this season, Smith led the way with 23 points while Campbell added 16 and
Xavier Baldwin scored 15 including several critical free throws down the stretch. Third in the league with 8.6 3-pointers per game, the Lions were held in check by UAH on the day as they were able to connect on only five of their 22 attempts from beyond the arc in the contest.
