HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the second straight year, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is set to host the NCAA South Region Men's Basketball Tournament, and the top-seeded Chargers will open the national tournament with No. 8 seed Benedict at home at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday at 6 p.m.
General admission tickets for the contest are still available, and the Spragins Hall box office will open on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
The Chargers enter the NCAA tournament on a program-best 17-game winning streak after taking home the Gulf South Conference Tournament championship last weekend.
This week, a pair of Chargers picked up some postseason accolades as
Josh Magette's efforts this year earned him Daktronics South Region Player of the Year status while
Jaime Smith joined him on the All-South Region First Team.
Continuing to pace the nation, Magette is first in the country in assists per game while Smith's 3-point field goal percentage is the best in the land.
A year ago in the team's run to the Elite Eight, the Blue and White were led by Smith who averaged 21.8 points per game in the NCAA tournament as he shot a blistering 61.5 percent from beyond the arc. Also impressive was
Zane Campbell who averaged 16 points, and Magette dished out 41 assists in UAH's four games.
When last on the court this year, UAH dominated Christian Brothers defensively, allowing a season-low of just 43 points while winning the first-ever GSC Tournament title in program history.
Magette led the Chargers in the contest as he scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds en route to earning the title of the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. For the contest, the Chargers shot an even 50 percent while limiting the country's eighth-ranked team to a shooting percentage of just 40 percent in the contest.
Benedict comes into the tournament as the No. 8 seed after winning the automatic bid given to the champion of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Tigers are led by Marcus Goode who has averaged a double-double on the season. The Daktronics All-South Region Second Team selection scored on average 18.5 points per game while grabbing 11.3 boards per contest. Other than Goode, just one other Tiger averages double figures as Antrjuan Albright has a scoring average of 10.0 points.
The contest will mark the first between the two programs.
