HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team erased a 16-point second-half deficit on Wednesday night and pushed past visiting Trevecca Nazarene 83-69 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 1-4.
Wayne Dedrick and
Ronnie Mack combined for 52 points as Dedrick led all scorers with a season-high 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from downtown. Mack finished the night with 23 points while draining seven 3-pointers and shooting 8-for-13 from the field.
Garrett Cosgrove came off the bench to chip in with 10 points in the first half as he connected on three treys in the opening stanza, and sophomore guard
Greg Gardner dished out a career-high 10 assists to go along with seven points. Gardner also did a good job of protecting the rock with only two turnovers on the night while running the offense.
It was a tale of two halves for the Chargers as Trevecca Nazarene went into the half up 37-26. The Trojans shot 57.7 percent from the field while holding UAH to just 31 percent shooting.
After UAH took a 24-18 lead at the 8:37 mark in the first half as Gardner connected with
Conner Blasi for an emphatic dunk, the Trojans would finish the half on a 19-2 run to take the big lead into the locker room at the break.
The lead would expand to as many as 16 at 45-29 with 17:35 left in the contest, but with the TNU lead 52-38 at the 13:12 mark, Mack would hit a trey that would start an 18-3 run for the Chargers that put the hosts back up at 56-55 with just over nine minutes to play.
Not looking back, the Chargers would push the lead all the way out to 75-65 with one of Mack's 3-pointers, and free throws down the stretch – five from Gardner and three by
Spencer Palmer – helped the Chargers eventually lead by as many as 16 before the 83-69 final.
UAH will look to build upon the win on Saturday when Tennessee Temple visits. Tip is slated for 5 p.m.
