HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –
Bouncing back from the tough setback Friday night, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team dispatched of visiting Montevallo on Sunday afternoon behind another two-goal performance by Kyle Simmons. The 3-0 victory improves the Chargers to 2-1-1, while the Falcons fall to 2-2-0.

UAH grabbed an early lead, getting on the board in the fifth minute when Mitch Wilson tenaciously fended off a Falcon defender before crossing it into the box where another Montevallo player accidentally headed the nicely played ball into his own net to provide a 1-0 advantage for the hosts.

Not content with the one-goal lead, the Chargers continued to apply pressure and in the 14th minute, the local connection of Wilson and Simmons hooked up for the second time in three games as Wilson passed it ahead to Simmons who booted it from about 15 yards to the upper right corner to make it 2-0.

Providing the team with a stranglehold on the contest, the Blue and White struck again in the 29th minute when off of a corner kick, Esra Arnason moved it ahead to Simmons in a scrum in front of the Montevallo keeper, and Simmons was able to spin, control the ball, and deposit it into the net for his second of the day.

The two scores give Simmons four on the season, moving him just one off of his total from all of last season.

In the second half, Montevallo would put forth a stronger attack and ultimately ended the game with a 19-9 advantage in shots thanks to a 14-shot barrage in the second 45 minutes, but the Charger defense held firm as freshman Will Carpenter earned his first career shutout in just his fourth collegiate contest as he stopped six shots on the afternoon.

Head coach Matt Watts also gave significant credit for the clean sheet after the game to center backs Isleifur Gudmundsson and Halldor Bogason who played strong defensively.

The second-half effort provided Montevallo with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, but the Chargers held a slim edge in corners with seven – including five in the first half – compared to six for the visitors.

UAH will look to build upon Sunday's victory when the team travels to West Alabama and West Florida next weekend as the Chargers step back into conference play.
