HUNTSVILLE | Behind a 23-point performance from
Ronnie Mack, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team captured a 66-52 victory over visiting Lee on Saturday night in Gulf South Conference action at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH improves to 8-7 (4-4 GSC) with the win, while Lee slips to 6-8 (2-6 GSC).
Â
With the triumph, UAH joins four other teams in a tie for third place in the GSC standings.
Â
Wayne Dedrick scored nine of his 13 points in the second half to join Mack in double figures, while
Greg Gardner also turned in a strong showing with nine points, a team-best nine rebounds, and seven assists to help UAH move back above .500 on the year.
Â
The Chargers started out of the gates slowly, allowing Lee to build up an early 9-2 advantage, but UAH would dominate the final 16 minutes of the half, more than doubling Lee's scoring output with a 32-15 run that put the hosts on top 34-24 at the halftime break.
Â
Mack and Gardner each hit a pair of 3-pointers during the span to help push the Chargers comfortably ahead.
Â
The momentum carried over into the second half as Gardner hit a long-range shot right out of the break to spark a 10-0 run over the first two minutes of the half, and the Chargers would build up its largest lead of the night at 54-30 when Dedrick hit a triple just over five minutes into the second stanza.
Â
The terrific start to the half proved to be vital as Lee would limit UAH to just 12 points through the end of the contest, but the large lead would prove to be insurmountable as the guests were unable to ever close the gap back to single digits.
Â
UAH concluded the night shooting 40.0 percent from the field, and the team connected on 12 3-pointers to mark the 10th game this season that the squad has hit at least 10. The Charger defense limited the Flames to a field goal percentage of 36.8 percent, but Lee did hold a 42-34 edge on the glass.
Â
After turning the ball over a season-high 21 times against West Georgia, UAH limited its miscues to just 11 on this evening, and the team capitalized on Lee's 16 giveaways by converting them into 21 points.
Â
The Chargers will now return to the road for their next two games, travelling to Union on Thursday before making the short trek to Florence to face rival North Alabama on Saturday at 3 p.m.
