LIVE VIDEOBUSY START: The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team will open the 2014-15 campaign with plenty of action, hosting three games in four days beginning with a Friday night visit from Saint Leo at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers will then face Tampa at 2 p.m. on Saturday before taking Sunday off ahead of Monday night's 7:30 p.m. showdown with Trevecca Nazarene.
Â
GSC/SSC CHALLENGE: UAH is hosting three teams at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall this weekend as North Alabama will join Saint Leo and Tampa. UNA will play Tampa Friday night at 5 p.m. in a rematch of an NCAA tournament game a season ago, and the Lions will then take on Saint Leo at noon on Saturday.
Â
NEW FACES: The Chargers return nine letterwinners from last season including six players who recorded at least one start, but the team also has several new pieces that are generating excitement in the program. Junior transfer
Preston Herring – who played two seasons at Division I institution Austin Peay – has returned to the Tennessee Valley where he starred at West Limestone during his high school days, and the 6-8 forward will provide the Chargers with some size inside. Herring was selected as one of the GSC's top newcomers headed into the season, and he was joined by redshirt freshman
Justin Ward – an all-state selection during his senior year at Buckhorn High School – on the list. Also creating a buzz is redshirt freshman
Kip Owens who poses a dual threat both under the basket and on the perimeter as the 6-9 forward also possesses a strong shooting touch.
Â
KEY RETURNERS: After leading the GSC in 3-pointers per game and 3-point field goal percentage last season, the Chargers will be looking to senior guard
Ronnie Mack to lead the way heading into the new season. The Birmingham native enters the year just 141 points away from joining UAH's 1,000-point club, and he owns a career mark of 43.2 percent from beyond the arc. UAH also returns last year's leading assist man in the GSC as
Greg Gardner returns for his junior season after ranking 19th in Division II with 165 assists last year.
Â
ABOUT SAINT LEO: The Lions have reached three consecutive NCAA tournaments, but after graduating quite a bit of talent from last year's team, the Lions have been picked to finish sixth in the Sunshine State Conference. Ron Foxx is the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 10.1 points per game last season.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: Friday's meeting will mark the first between the two programs.
Â
ABOUT TAMPA: Also coming off an NCAA tournament appearance last season are the Spartans who were picked to finish tied for fourth in the SSC. UT's top returner is Jordan Davis who was an all-SSC performer last year while scoring 11.3 points per game and dishing out 193 assists.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: The Spartans hold a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Chargers, and the last meeting came in the NCAA tournament in 2000.
Â
ABOUT TREVECCA NAZARENE: The Trojans are picked to finish seventh in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and feature a roster that is laden with juniors but features no seniors. David Woodard led the team in his sophomore year last season, scoring 14.8 points per game.
Â
SERIES HISTORY: After splitting two meetings last year, Trevecca Nazarene holds a slight 6-5 edge all-time against UAH. In an 83-69 victory in the Rocket City last season,
Ronnie Mack hit seven 3-pointers en route to scoring 23 points against the Trojans.
