Chargers Defeat Lee 59-52 on the Road

Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team hung on for an important road win on Saturday night, defeating host Lee 59-52 in the team's final road Gulf South Conference contest of the season. The Chargers improve to 14-11 (10-8 GSC), while Lee slips to 9-14 (5-12 GSC).

Four players scored in double figures for the Chargers with Ronnie Mack leading the way with 13 points, while senior Andrew Donovan hit three big shots from beyond the arc en route to scoring 11. Both Conner Blasi and Greg Gardner chipped in with 10, and it was that pair that was especially key in the game's waning moments.

With the Chargers up by just four and the clock rolling under 45 seconds to play, Blasi found himself surrounded by four Lee players after a missed UAH shot, and the 6-9 senior beat them all to grab a key offensive rebound before subsequently being fouled.

After making the UAH lead 57-51 by sinking both free throws, Blasi then swatted away Cory Billingsley's attempt at the other end, and after Billingsley collected the offensive board, he missed another attempt that was gathered up by Gardner who was fouled and made both at the charity stripe to put the contest out of reach.

Both finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line, and Gardner dished out five assists for the game while Blasi grabbed a team-best five rebounds.

The contest was not always a tight one as UAH led 32-19 at the half, and the guests pushed the lead out to 20 at 39-19 with a 7-0 run to start the second half, but Lee would outscore UAH by a 33-20 margin the rest of the way to create the interesting ending.

After shooting 45.5 percent in the first half, UAH ended the contest shooting 39.6 percent, but the team's terrific defensive effort held Lee to a field goal percentage of 29.8 percent for the game. The hosts – who were coming off of a 71-69 upset of second-place West Alabama – did handily outrebound UAH, grabbing 42 rebounds compared to 27 for the Chargers.

Bryce Copeland led the Flames with 14 points, while Chad Lee scored eight and registered 10 rebounds.

The Chargers will now return home for the final week of the regular season, hosting Union at 7:30 Thursday night before welcoming rival North Alabama at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
