Box Score HUNTSVILLE |
Hermann Bjornsson scored the game-winner just under a minute into overtime, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team earned its sixth straight victory with a 2-1 decision over visiting Mississippi College in front of a large Charger Park crowd on Friday night. The Chargers improve to 6-1-0 (1-0-0 Gulf South Conference) with the triumph, while MC slips to 5-3-0 (0-2-0 GSC).
Â
After the visitors committed a foul inside the box to give UAH a golden opportunity to take the game in overtime, Bjornsson stepped up to the spot and rocketed the PK attempt into the upper right corner, sparking a raucous celebration on the pitch as the Chargers started conference play with the thrilling win.
Â
It looked as if the contest had been won by UAH in regulation when
Kyle Simmons scored his fourth of the year.
Anthony Benitez assisted on the strike, playing a perfect ball across from the right side to Simmons who was in front to bury it in the 76th minute to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
Â
Mississippi College then had a player sent off in the 83rd minute, but even despite playing a man down, the Choctaws were able to find the equalizer in the 86th minute as Josh Barrera headed it in to level the score at 1-1.
Â
That goal ended what had been a stretch of 285 minutes that the Chargers had gone without allowing a score.
Â
The match was closely contested with Mississippi College holding a slight 16-15 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corners, and UAH had five of its shots on goal while MC had three on
Michael Winstone's frame.
Â
Winstone moved to 5-1-0 on the season with the victory.
Â
UAH will look to continue its winning ways on Sunday as the team continues conference play with a visit from Delta State. Kickoff at Charger Park is slated for 3:30 p.m.
