Live VideoMAGNOLIA STATE SWING: The Chargers head to Mississippi this weekend as the top team in the league for a pair of critical Gulf South Conference contests at Delta State and Mississippi College. UAH (17-6, 12-5 GSC) will take on the Statesmen at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before battling the Choctaws on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Â
ALONE IN FIRST: A tumultuous period in conference action has led to UAH taking over sole possession of first place after the Chargers entered last week a game behind both West Georgia and Shorter. With both of those teams losing twice during the period, UWG and SU are now tied with West Alabama for second at 11-6. Each of those teams still have a game against each other left, also.
Â
BALANCED EFFORT: UAH has won three straight games to vault to the top of the standings, and in those three games, four different players have averaged double figures for the Chargers with
Seab Webster's 15.3 points per contest leading the way.
Preston Herring is averaging 14.3 points during the span, with
Ronnie Mack adding 11.3.
Justin Ward has come off the bench in each contest and has scored a strong 10.7 points per contest.
Â
CHARITY STRIPE IMPROVEMENT. The Chargers have improved their performance at the free throw line of late, shooting better than 80 percent in three of the team's last four games including a 32-for-39 showing against Lee last Thursday. With those strong showings, UAH is now shooting 71.2 percent as a team at the line on the season, and Ward is leading the team with an 85.7 percent effort.
Â
ABOUT DELTA STATE: Delta State enters the weekend at 12-11 (9-8 GSC), and is 6-5 at Sillers Coliseum on the DSU campus. The Statesmen – who had dropped three straight prior to beating Valdosta State 80-69 last Saturday – are led by Devin Schmidt's 19.7 points and 4.1 assists per game.
Â
LAST MEETING: The Chargers were 73-61 winners on Jan. 5 in the Rocket City as five different players scored in double figures. Herring was 11-for-16 from the line in the contest and paced UAH with 17 points, while Webster nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Schmidt led DSU with 20 points.
Â
ABOUT MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE: Winners of three in a row, the Choctaws carry a 10-9 (8-9 GSC) record into play this week that starts for them with a Thursday visit from North Alabama. Nearly averaging a double-double on the season, Tory Rice leads the way for MC with 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest.
Â
LAST MEETING: Mississippi College left Huntsville on Jan. 3 with a 71-67 victory after erasing a six-point deficit in the game's final three minutes. Webster scored 22 and collected eight rebounds for the Chargers, while Rice had 14 points and six boards for MC.
