Â
The Chargers (20-8) won a share of the regular season conference title for the fifth time in the past six seasons as will serve as the top seed, while UNA (13-15) is the No. 8 seed for the tournament.
Â
UAH – under the direction of seven-time GSC Coach of the Year
Lennie Acuff – is making its 11th straight tournament appearance, and the squad features an 11-13 record in GSC tournament play including a championship in 2012 to go along with runner-up finishes in 2003 and 2010.
Â
The Chargers were led in the regular season by a pair of all-conference performers in
Seab Webster and
Preston Herring who paced the team with 15.0 and 11.8 points per contest, respectively, and those two were part of a quartet of UAH players who scored in double figures when the Chargers defeated UNA in Huntsville on Jan. 17 by an 81-72 score.
Â
But it was North Alabama – who enters the tournament as the defending champion after winning last year's crown – who won the most recent meeting, defeating the Chargers 83-67 just two days ago in Florence behind a 23-point showing from senior Nathan Spehr.
Â
For the season, Spehr led the Lions with 16.5 points per game.
Â
UAH was paced by
Taylor Chapman's 12 points in the loss on Saturday.
Â
The winner of the contest will advance to the tournament semifinals which will be held on Friday on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, facing the winner of fourth-seeded Shorter and No. 5 seed Union.
