UAH Ready for 2015 GSC Tournament as Second Seed

Live Stats | Tournament Central

LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The No. 8 and reigning Gulf South Conference Tournament Champion University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team is set for the 2015 GSC Championships as the second seed with an opening matchup against the fifth seed in Valdosta State on Saturday at noon at Tartt Field, hosted by West Alabama from May 2-5.

The Chargers finished the 2015 regular season with a 35-9-1 overall record and 21-9-1 in conference play at the helm of head coach Hunter Royer, giving the program a .686 overall winning percentage (142-64-2) over the past four years.

UAH wrapped up the regular season slate with a trip to GSC Regular Season Champion West Alabama, falling in each game of the three-game series by scores of 7-2, 12-3 and 11-1.

Several members of the UAH baseball team received recognition in the conference's season awards, highlighted by Colton Simbeck as GSC Player of the Year and AJ Walden as GSC Freshman of the Year. Seniors Ryan Barnes, Chandler Brock, Daniel Koger, Luke Mould and Simbeck also earned First Team All-GSC honors.

The UAH offense has been tremendous in the 2015 season, ranking eighth in NCAA Division-II in batting average (.345), fifth in slugging percentage (.556), third in on-base percentage (.442) and ninth in scoring (8.7). Three-time All-GSC honoree Brock led the way with a .411 batting average and 48 RBI, while Simbeck – a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist – had a conference-best 14 homers and a .908 slugging percentage.

Koger has been the ace of the weekend rotation, which has been comprised of a trio of lefties for the majority of the season with the compliments of fellow southpaws Tyler Howell and Mitchell Wright. Koger (9-1) paces the staff with a 2.70 ERA over 76.2 innings, followed by Wright (3.52 ERA, 46.0 IP) and Howell (4.86 ERA, 50.0 IP).

The Chargers took on the Blazers at home at Charger Park on April 3-4 earlier this season, with the Blue and White winning one out of the three games played by a score of 13-10. UAH owns an all-time series record of 30-29 against VSU, taking four out of the last six matchups.

The Blazers ended the regular season with a 28-17 overall record and a 19-11 mark in league games, thanks to the offense that bats .343 with 350 runs scored which both rank second to UAH in the GSC. The VSU pitching staff has a 4.55 ERA, led by starters Kyle Andre (3.36 ERA, 72.1 IP) and Mitchell Cody (3.46 ERA, 88.1 IP).

The winner of Saturday's matchup between UAH and VSU will look ahead to a 7 p.m. contest Sunday against the winner of West Georgia (3)/West Florida (4). The loser between the Chargers and Blazers will play the loser of West Alabama (1)/Delta State (6) on Sunday at noon.
