Kaplan Earns Final GSC Player of the Week Award of Season

3/4/2019 11:00:00 AM

HUNTSVILLE | The Gulf South Conference announced its final GSC Men's Basketball Player of the Week of the 2018-19 season on Monday, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville's JJ Kaplan has earned the accolade following his terrific performance at West Georgia last week.

This marks the first award for a UAH player this year, and it is the second weekly honor of Kaplan's career as he was selected as the GSC Freshman of the Week once last season.

The Huntsville native turned in the best showing from a Charger player this season on Thursday in Carrollton as he scored 32 and grabbed 13 rebounds, going 10-for-14 from the field and 12-for-16 from the charity stripe. For good measure, the Grissom High School product collected three steals, added two assists, and turned the ball over just once.

Kaplan was one of three players in the league on Thursday night to score 32 points, but he turned in the best overall performance including turning in his sixth double-double of the year.

The redshirt sophomore has been a revelation this season, currently ranking second on the squad with 13.3 points per game to go along with a rebounding average of 8.2 which is currently the third-best mark in the GSC.

Kaplan and his teammates will be back in action on Tuesday at home when the Chargers take on that same West Georgia team in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championship presented by VisitSpaceCoast.com.

Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
