VALDOSTA, Ga. | The second-seeded University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team learned its opponent in semifinals of the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Regional this evening as the Chargers will take on No. 3 seed Lee on Sunday at 7:45 p.m. CT at the Complex on the campus of Valdosta State.
Â
The Flames advanced with a 72-69 win over Georgia Southwestern.
Â
The two teams squared off just eight days ago in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championship in Huntsville where the Chargers prevailed 54-52 in a defensive battle. In that contest, the Chargers were led by
Sam Orf's 16 points, while Jayce Willingham had 15 for the Flames.
Â
Neither team shot the ball well in the contest as Lee connected on 38.8 percent of its attempts compared to a shooting mark of 33.3 percent for UAH.
Â
This will mark the first time that the two programs have met in the NCAA tournament, but the Chargers are 15-5 all-time against Sunday night's opponent.
Â
For the Chargers, this marks the program's 13th overall appearance in the NCAA tournament, 10th berth in 12 years, and third straight, and UAH has posted a 13-11 record all-time in the national postseason. UAH is playing in the semifinal game of the regional for the seventh time after earning a bye in this year's truncated field due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the team is 5-1 in its previous six trips to this round.Â
Â
Orf is leading the Chargers on the season as he is now averaging 18.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game after the GSC West Division Player of the Year scored 33 and had 17 rebounds in the title game of the GSC tournament last Sunday. Two other Chargers are scoring in double figures as
Seth Swalve is averaging 12.4 and
JJ Kaplan is scoring 11.9.
Â
All three are seniors and have over 1,000 points for their careers.
Â
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the South Region championship game to take on the winner of No. 1 seed Flagler and No. 5 seed West Georgia. The region final is slated for 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday in Valdosta.
