HUNTSVILLE | The Gulf South Conference announced its 2022 Men's Basketball Preseason Release on Wednesday, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville was voted first in the GSC Preseason Coaches poll with a league-high 12 first place votes.

This is the third time in the past four seasons the UAH men's basketball program has been voted atop the league's prognostications.

UAH's 144 points in the poll led the way, followed by Lee in second at 128 points and one first-place nod. Valdosta State (108 points), West Alabama (104 points) and Union (103 points) rounded out the top five.

The Chargers additionally led the conference with two players being named to the Preseason All-GSC squad, including
Chaney Johnson and
CJ Williamson.

A First Team All-GSC honoree in 2022, Johnson finished the season with a scoring average of 16.8 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds per game and a team-leading 22 blocks.

Williamson – the GSC tournament's Most Outstanding Player – led the Chargers in 2021-22 with 17.0 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game while also tying for the team lead with 68 steals.

The GSC additionally unveiled its Top Newcomers for the 2022-23 campaign, which included
Tanner Shulman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and
Hunter Vick (Camden, Tenn.) from UAH. Shulman spent the past few seasons at Division I Lipscomb, while Vick transferred to UAH from fellow GSC member Union.

The Chargers first action of the 2022-23 campaign is an exhibition at Auburn on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., before the squad officially starts the campaign at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Lakeland, Florida, from Nov. 5-6.
