Day, Hancock and Stanberry Collect GSC Weekly Honors

4/20/2022 11:00:00 AM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Gulf South Conference announced its weekly men's track & field award winners, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville was represented by Jay Day as GSC Track Athlete of the Week, Zach Hancock as GSC Field Athlete of the Week and Bobby Stanberry as GSC Freshman of the Week.

This is the first weekly honors this season for both Day and Stanberry, but Hancock collects his fourth GSC Field Athlete of the Week award this season and 13th of his career.

Day shattered the program record – a mark he set in 2021 – by nearly 20 seconds as he placed second in the 5000-meter invitational race at the War Eagle Invitational with a time of 14:08.88. He topped the NCAA provisional mark in the race as he now ranks 23rd nationally.

A Madison, Alabama, native, Hancock notched a pair of top three finishes in the field at the War Eagle Invitational including second place in the shot put at 18.42 meters and third in the discus at 55.30 meters. He bested the NCAA provisional standard in both events, and his season-best shot put propelled him to fifth in the nation.

Stanberry broke a nine-year old program record in 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.02 for 11th place at the War Eagle Invitational. His time in 400-meter hurdles ranks second in the conference this season and is the fastest by a GSC freshman in 2022.

UAH looks ahead to competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
