FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team is set to compete at the 2023 NCAA Division II South Region Championships as the third seed on the campus of Nova Southeastern with a first-round matchup against third-seeded Embry-Riddle on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

The UAH men's basketball program earned its 15th all-time berth to the NCAA tournament, as the Chargers are making their fifth consecutive trip to a South Regional and fourth under head coach
John Shulman.

The Chargers made it to the round of 32 in the 2022 campaign with a first-round victory over Barry before falling to Embry Riddle the following day. This will be the second time UAH and Embry-Riddle have matched up in the NCAA tournament, as the two teams have matched up only one other time in the regular season with the Eagles also winning that contest.

Overall in program history, UAH is 15-13 in NCAA tournament games.

UAH earned its at-large berth to the South Regional with a 25-7 overall record that included a 19-5 record in Gulf South Conference play. The Chargers most recently fell to West Georgia narrowly by a score of 71-69 in the GSC tournament semifinals.

The Chargers are led by GSC Player of the Year
Chaney Johnson with a team-high 15.8 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game, ranking in the top eight in the conference in both categories.

Johnson is joined in double-digit scoring average by both
Luke Burnett at 13.9 points per game and
Max Shulman with 12.1 points per game, with Burnett ranking first in the nation with 104 three-pointers made and Shulman rating second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game.

This season, UAH is averaging 76.8 points per game and shooting 46.1 percent from the field, while limiting opponents to 70.2 points per game and a 43.9 field goal percentage.

Embry-Riddle starts out the NCAA tournament with a 19-11 overall record that included a 10-10 mark in Sunshine State Conference play. The Eagles are led by Malcolm Whitlow with 18.1 points per game, while the ERAU defense holds teams to 75.6 points per contest.

The winner of Saturday's game moves on to play at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday against the winner of second-seeded West Alabama and seventh-seeded Tuskegee.
