Men's Basketball Dubbed First in GSC Preseason Poll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The UAH men's basketball team was voted first in the 2024 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll announced on Wednesday.
 
The league additionally announced its 2024 Preseason All-GSC squad, which features UAH senior backcourt members Luke Burnett and Tommy Murr. 
 
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Burnett was the nation's third-ranked three-point shooter in NCAA Division II with 114 three-pointers made (3.56 per game) in the 2023-24 campaign. In 32 starts, Burnett averaged 15.8 points per game at 38.8% from three. 

Tommy Murr led the Chargers in scoring last year as he put up 16.6 points per game and held the second highest free throw percentage in Division II at 93.53%. The Athens, Ala. native, averaged 29.7 minutes per game and shot 48% from the field along with a 38.3% three point percentage. 

The conference also announced its GSC Newcomer Watchlist, which features UAH incoming transfer from Berry College and Cleveland, Tenn. native, Blake Campbell. 
 
The Chargers are under new leadership for the 2024-25 campaign as Mick Hedgpeth takes over as head coach for UAH. Hedgpeth brings an 80-32 record overall as a head coach and most recently won a Southern Athletic Association Championship at Berry College last season. 

The Blue & White concluded their 2023-24 season at 21-11 (17-7 GSC) with a runner-up finish in the GSC Championship game against West Georgia and fell in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional in a 104-78 loss to Embry-Riddle. 

UAH led the GSC in field goal percentage (47.9%), free throw percentage (78.7%), and three pointers made (356) last year. Burnett and Murr both ranked inside the top 10 in the GSC in points per game last season.

The Chargers will kick off their 2024-25 campaign in Montevallo, Ala. on November 8-9 when they take on national runner-up Nova Southeastern and Barry.
