UAH Posts Historical Day At Division II Challenge

Complete Results

GENEVA, Ohio – The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's track and field team collected four school records Saturday at the NCAA Division II Team Challenge at the SPIRE Institute to post one of the most historical days in program history.

“We made the 12-hour bus ride well worth our while because we really performed awesome today,” head coach David Cain said. We had a bunch of PRs and school records. I'm just really proud of the men's team and how they performed. There were a lot of teams who brought full teams and we only brought 12 guys, and they finished fourth as a team. With a shorthanded squad, they really got it done.”

For the second time this season, senior Andrew Cole set the program record in the high jump, this time clearing the bar set at 6-7 which led to a second-place finish. Cole had previously leaped 6-6 3/4 in the season-opener.

Freshman Alex Buchanan also set his second school record of the year in the same event, leaping a distance of 44-9 1/2 in the triple jump to finish 11th. The mark betters his previous best by two inches. Buchanan also placed eighth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 20-3 1/2.

Senior Jaion Rayford tied his own school record in the 200 meters, crossing with a time of 22.03 which is matched the time he ran last season to set the program record.

The Chargers had two sprinters advance to the 60-meter finals where senior Richard Wilson finished third with a time of 6.96. Sophomore Dezmen Cage clocked a time of 7.08 to place ninth in the finals.

The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Dezmen Cage, Rayford, and freshmen Brennan Parks and Stephon Hampton compiled a time of 3:16.16 to finish second overall - the time ranks as the ninth-fastest in the nation this year. The time lowered the previous program-best of 3:19.30 set in 2009 by over three seconds.

In the pole vault, junior Luke Beck improved on his season-best mark by nearly six inches, clearing a height of 15-6 1/4 and placing second overall.

Senior Josh Moshier led a trio to top-10 finishes in the 5,000 meters with a second-place finish and time of 14:55.78. Freshman Jose Ortega (15:08.69) and junior Dante Dorsey (15:25.46) both clocked season-best times to finish seventh and 10th, respectively.

Competing against many of the top Division II teams in the nation, UAH notched four personal-bests, eight season-bests, four school records and one NCAA Provisional mark.

Next up, UAH will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the Vulcan Classic. The event is slated for Feb. 10-11 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
